What a beautiful Blue day

I don’t have a big rant to post here, but I wanted to at least register my happy disbelief. The Democrats have taken back the House, and possibly (probably?) the Senate. Huzzah! Having a bunch of yes-men in control of the Senate and House who would approve anything the president said and allow travesties like his “signing statements” was a mistake. Let’s just hope the democrats can maintain solidarity and actually have a consistent party vision. I have nightmares where they break this landmark moment by turning on one another right now. Still… what a beautiful Blue day!

Welcome to Fascist America!

I just read a great article on a truly horrible subject… the recent rise of fascism in America. It has some particularly apt lines, such as:

America is full of decent people, who could never believe their own government could become fascist. So were Germany and Italy in the 1920s. But they became fascist anyway. They passed laws suspending civil liberties, but the government promised the frightened populace that those laws would only be used against targets like “Communist terrorists.” And, a little bit at a time, the target kept getting bigger and bigger, slowly enough that the people who weren’t paying close attention never detected it.

And, next thing you know, there were millions of people dead! So, it turns out, it would have been worth paying attention after all.

What is wrong with America?

I’m sitting here at work, completely dumb-founded, after I just read that the Bush administration wants to push to renew the American capacity to make nuclear weapons– 125 freaking nukes a year!

I’m shell-shocked. The U.S. just seems doomed to me some days.

Nuclear Power Now!

Howard Tayler has just posted a rant about nuclear power (and our woeful under-use of it in America) that I just love.

“Intelligent Design” Officially Belongs in the Science Classroom

Yes, it’s a very sad day indeed. By a 6 to 4 board vote, the Kansas School Board just approved teaching Intelligent Design in science classrooms. (continued)

NPR makes a blatantly biased statement

On NPR’s “Morning Edition” some time last week, they interviewed senator Rick Santorum.  He made a comment about evolution.  On Morning Edition they frequently read letters submitted by listeners, and the only letter they read that commented on this interview argued against Senator Santorum’s view point.  Although I agreed with the listener’s comments, that the lack of existence of a god does not relieve a “moral demand” on humanity, but come on guys, you can at least try to be balanced!

New topic on liberalism

This is actually an old discussion, but a fun one!

Should liberals try to be more in touch with the American mainstream?

Christian Apocalyptic Legislators Don’t Care About the Environment

Apparently over 40% of the U.S. congress believe that “environmental destruction is not only to be disregarded but actually welcomed — even hastened — as a sign of the coming Apocalypse.” (continued)

The importance of political parties

I was just discussing this with my boss, and was wondering if I’ve pestered you lot with my thoughts on political party affiliation of candidates. (continued)

Free Rice

Okay, I’ll admit that it’s entirely possible that I am the last person to learn about this website*, but it’s really addictive.  It’s a game that tests your vocabulary.  Each time you get a word’s meaning correct, 20 grains of rice are donated to the UN World Program.  So, give Free Rice a whirl.  I bet you’ll have fun and you’ll get to help make strides toward ending hunger.

*I heard about it forever ago, I just never actually looked at it.

Security Cam Music Video

This band decided they didn’t have money to make a video, so they set up in public places in view of security cameras, then asked to get the footage from the people.

Pretty cool results, though a little creepy to think how much these cameras are around.

A news story about it is here

Some Frogs and Toads are just weird…

Thanks to one of my favorites blogs, Zooillogix, I recently got to see toads giving live birth from their back and frogs without lungs. (continued)
