How Much is Inside

If you’ve ever pondered such earth-shaking questions as “How much ink is in a sharpie, anyway?” or “What’s the maximum length of a trail I could make with a can of Whipped Cream?, then How Much is Inside is just the place for you to visit. (continued)

Well, my heart is beating again

What a snafu today has been. This morning, as per my usual routine, I logged into my accounts at Wells Fargo, to make sure no unusual charges had been made (I don’t balance my checkbook, so I use increased vigilence to make up for it). Imagine my (heart-stopping, brain-freezing) surprise when I discovered that my checking account suddenly had about $50 in it. (continued)

GMail Invites

I have six.  Anybody need one?

You know, it’d be interesting to backtrack the invite chains and see how long and through whom the invite you get has travelled.

How do I wash Windows?

As many of you know, I mostly use Linux as my Operating System of choice. But with just a few programs to clean things up, I actually made my Windows quite useful. So here are the programs I use, to make Windows work for me. (continued)

Wow, they’ve found the(a) depression gene

This is from the July 18, 2003 issue of Science (301; 386-389), but was mentioned on NPR this morning.  The Serotonin Transport gene (5-HTT) has two alleles in humans, short (s) and long (l).  In a longitudinal study of a New Zealand village’s population, those with s were significantly more likely to have major depressive episodes (They were studied at age 26, and the episodes were within the past year, in response to stressful life events from age 21) if they had the s allele.

Problems….

Hey all- Somehow the database got corrupted, and all the users
were deleted.  I’m working on it.
Update: I think I’ve restored all the active
users..  check your e-mail for the new password if you can’t log
in.
Sorry about this. I just made a new backup, so if anything
happens again, I’ll be set…  and I’ll start backing up once a
week, like I should have been. (continued)

Deer Tag

So I’ve been thinking about Mighty Hunters, using their big frickin’ guns to shoot animals from a hundred yards while sitting in comfortably padded hunting blinds (and generally thinking of the African and Amer-Indian tribes who use blow darts and home-made bows and arrows to do their killing as weaker people).  I want to start a new sport: Deer Tag.

Let’s Talk Music

What with moving to a new state and all, I’ve been feeling the urge to revitalize the things around me. Not change, necessarily, mind you, just revitalize– for instance, I love my short sleeve buttoned shirts.. but I need some new ones.
Similarly, I’ve been feeling the urge to get some fresh, new music. But most of what I hear on the radio is garbage. So let’s share some new (to us, at least) music we’ve discovered, and think others should as well. (continued)

Free Rice

Okay, I’ll admit that it’s entirely possible that I am the last person to learn about this website*, but it’s really addictive.  It’s a game that tests your vocabulary.  Each time you get a word’s meaning correct, 20 grains of rice are donated to the UN World Program.  So, give Free Rice a whirl.  I bet you’ll have fun and you’ll get to help make strides toward ending hunger.

*I heard about it forever ago, I just never actually looked at it.

Security Cam Music Video

This band decided they didn’t have money to make a video, so they set up in public places in view of security cameras, then asked to get the footage from the people.

Pretty cool results, though a little creepy to think how much these cameras are around.

A news story about it is here

Some Frogs and Toads are just weird…

Thanks to one of my favorites blogs, Zooillogix, I recently got to see toads giving live birth from their back and frogs without lungs. (continued)
