First things first:
Guy named Shaun uses a cricket bat as his primary weapon. How can I NOT like that?Okay, so, I’m not too good at movie reviews, so this is weak, but…
It’s a GREAT movie. Go see it!
Basic plot: Shaun and friend Ed are slackers. World goes to shit. They go on mission to save the ones they love and beat zombies with blunt objects (such as, the aforementioned cricket bat). They’re from London. Everything is funnier with a south London accent.
It’s carried off in that British deadpan humor that gets all the more muted as situations become all the more absurd, the same inverse function that makes Monty Python movies so great. So while there are zombies trying to break in their back door, their thought is to watch TV and drink tea. Most of the movie’s comedy is built around this, combined with the actor who plays Shaun having the same sort of facial expressions as Rowan Atkinson and lots of funny one-liners. It not-so-subtly takes a broadside at the zombified existence of modern life (Because every zombie movie is, at heart, social commentary). And there’s a secondary character who, I think, was every shot at Hugh Grant and Harry Potter that could be taken, rolled up in to one doomed, doomed man, as cursed as an ensign on the Enterprise. That’s about all I can think of, for now.
I had the pleasure of seeing a preview for this movie, and have been dying to see it.
Glad to know that it’s good in the viewing as well as the pre-viewing. ![]()
Wow. Before reading this review and one other (I’m a CNN entertainment news junkie), I had no desire to see this movie. Now I’m feeling a little bit drawn to it. ![]()
Finally saw it last night… Overall, I liked it. Unfortunatel,y just like League of “quite special” Men, the volume was messed up (i.e. BLASTING LOUD!), which made some of the argments a little painful.
More romance and less humor than I was expecting, and the ending was kind of flat.
But- some hilarious moments. The morning after all hell breaks loose, and Shaun is just carrying on his day to day life is totally priceless.
Conversely, the people I saw it with hated it– I guess my movie taste is just low-brow.

Okay, I’ll admit that it’s entirely possible that I am the last person to learn about this website*, but it’s really addictive. It’s a game that tests your vocabulary. Each time you get a word’s meaning correct, 20 grains of rice are donated to the UN World Program. So, give Free Rice a whirl. I bet you’ll have fun and you’ll get to help make strides toward ending hunger.
*I heard about it forever ago, I just never actually looked at it.
This band decided they didn’t have money to make a video, so they set up in public places in view of security cameras, then asked to get the footage from the people.
Pretty cool results, though a little creepy to think how much these cameras are around.
A news story about it is here
Thanks to one of my favorites blogs, Zooillogix, I recently got to see toads giving live birth from their back and frogs without lungs. I must say, amphibians are weird! But do those frogs really count as amphibians…? And honestly, those toads gross me out a bit — and that’s hard for biology to do to me!
According to a recent anonymous poll in Nature magazine. Further commentary at WebMD. Crazy, huh?
