And now the poor fool, the poor Gilvoro, is busy reformatting my computer while I sit here and happily tap away at his keyboard. I really hope it's not as evil as it was the last time I had to have it done . . .

( shakes head ) Forgot to read the rest of your post before I blithely posted, but at least part of what i said was valid-- get a Knoppix disk from Stephen and see if you can recover the files before you do anything to the drive.

My computer has done this a few times, and it's not always due to an actual hard drive failure.

First, turn off your computer, open up the case, and shoot a LOT of compressed air in there, specifically around the hard drive region. Supposedly they're sealed, but... Next, kind of "jiggle" your computer case around, lightly. Then, try to boot up and access it again.

If that doesn't work, ask Stephen for a Knoppix disk. Even if windows won't recognize it, the data may still be there, waiting to be accessed.

...On a side-note, this was your back-up hard drive. Is it still under warranty? Most hard drives come with a 1 to 2 year warranty from the manufacturer.
