The Weekly Ebb of Time

Ever have a moment that really grabs you and makes you notice that time either seems incredibly slow or incredibly fast? I was just talking to my friend CloneBot, and I noted that I’d probably be out of graduate school in 90 weeks or so. Only 90 weeks! So many things in my life occur on a “once per week” basis– and those weeks pass so, so quickly. Read on for more analysis of my upcoming weeks.

I mean, heck, let’s look at all the things I usually only do once a week: see friends, play RPGs, do laundry, go shopping, sleep in late, go out to dinner, think about my finances, play with pets, and more.

In many ways, my life apart from work is measured by a weekly yardstick.

Lots of daunting things seem less daunting– and some seem much more daunting, when weighed on the “once a week” average of my life. A short list of upcoming stuff:

• My wedding? Over 50 weeks away, plenty of time to plan.
• My deadline for my next grant/paper: Only 6 or 7 weeks. Ugh.
• How long till a friend moves away: Only 8 weeks or so. Yikes!
• How long until even more friends move away: less than 30 weeks. Wow. Less than 30 chances to see them again.
• How long till Teisha graduates: Probably 200 weeks or so, which means I need to find a job around here for 100 weeks or so. Not too bad.
• How long since I last got new shirts (which I need): 16 weeks. Guess I should go shopping…
• How long since I’ve last written more than a few pages of something for fun: At least 100 weeks, which is too long.

So yeah, the weeks pass quickly. But maybe with that in mind, I can try to stay more motivated to use the time I have productively and enjoyably. And the best way to do that? Probably more exercise– I’ve always felt that regular exercise raises your energy level in life, and I’m out of practice.

Has anyone else been thinking about time a lot lately?

Is it really only 8 weeks or so left for me?! Eep.

But I’ve been trying to do the whole working out thing and it seems to be working well, I think I find myself plopping down infront of the computer to put my brain into the vegetative wowstate for a a few hours. I’m fortunately blessed with a metabolism… circadian rhythm … thing… where I only need about 6 hours of sleep and trying to sleep more is difficult.

The point I’m trying to make here is that unless you cut out sleep you may have to axe your TF2 time… as painful as that may sound. You’d be shocked at how much time you free up.

Oh also just another thought, if you want more time consider giving up blinking.

Andrew hasn’t been playing much TF2 recently, actually. Also, TF2 is much less time-consuming than WoW. Since I got it, my total /played for TF2 is less than 50 hours, and Andrew’s is a little more than 100 hours.

Yeah, TF2 is definitely not where our time has been going lately — while Paradox and myself have both played more hours total than Ted (I’m around 80 hours), he’s actually played more than both of us combined in the last two weeks (I’ve got 0 hours, Paradox is at 1.3 hours, and Ted’s at 1.7 hours — not a big difference, but still it shows that’s not what we’ve been doing).

But, while we have been pretty busy with entertaining parents and preparing for presentations lately, I’m not really sure I’ve missed the TF2 time sink. It’s so easy to sit in front of the computer and let your brain go on auto-pilot, especially after a hard, stressful day at work, but I don’t want to look back on my evenings and summarize them by saying I played TF2. I’m hoping that once I’m done with grad school I won’t be so mentally drained from a day’s work that the sedative of a few hours of TF2 is so appealing…
