So, about 18 months ago I made a commitment to myself to improve my health. Overall, I’ve been very successful, except in the exercise arena (that’s a subject for another post entirely). However, I’ve run into a bit of a breakfast rut.
I have steel cut oats cooked in 1% milk on weekdays and yogurt on weekends. This is my menu about 95% of the time. The oatmeal is filling and easy to make (it takes awhile to cook, but I can leave it unsupervised while I do other things). It can just be . . . well, boring, really. It’s just so simple and I’m so used to it that I don’t try other things. I’m a vegetarian of sorts- the pesco-lacto-ovo sort, to be exact- so that limits my options somewhat. Although, to be honest, laziness and inertia limit my options more.
So, this is a plea for ideas! What do you eat for breakfast? Are you like me in that you want something relatively fast and simple? Do you get into ruts as well? And, most selfishly and importantly, can you help me?
Oooh! Oooh! I have some suggestions here, for sure. Though, to be honest, breakfast is the easiest meal to get in a rut about. Just not many options that are fast and healthy.
1. Try adding a small amount of raisins, cinnamon, or brown sugar to the Oats. It can make a world of difference, without really changing the nutritional content at all.
2. I like Cinnamon-raisin toast (I make the bread at home myself, so I can use whole wheat and make sure it’s healthy)
3. My parents used to have fruit for breakfast– a cantaloupe third or a grapefruit.
4. Sometimes to change up the oatmeal taste, I like Cream of Wheat. It’s still breakfast cereal, but with a different taste and texture.
5. Or, you can do like Teisha and I usually do, and give up breakfast entirely. ![]()
I like the first four options, particularly 1 and 3. However, I really can’t skip breakfast. I get way too hungry too early in the day and when I’m working with students all morning, it’s a bad idea to be grumpy.
I actually made some Microwave-Baked English Toaster Muffin Bread this weekend which was tasty, but so far I’ve only eaten it as an afternoon snack. I wasn’t thinking of breakfast at all when I baked it. Incidentally, I was thinking about how cool it would be to bake bread in my microwave. ![]()

Okay, I’ll admit that it’s entirely possible that I am the last person to learn about this website*, but it’s really addictive. It’s a game that tests your vocabulary. Each time you get a word’s meaning correct, 20 grains of rice are donated to the UN World Program. So, give Free Rice a whirl. I bet you’ll have fun and you’ll get to help make strides toward ending hunger.
*I heard about it forever ago, I just never actually looked at it.
This band decided they didn’t have money to make a video, so they set up in public places in view of security cameras, then asked to get the footage from the people.
Pretty cool results, though a little creepy to think how much these cameras are around.
A news story about it is here
Thanks to one of my favorites blogs, Zooillogix, I recently got to see toads giving live birth from their back and frogs without lungs. I must say, amphibians are weird! But do those frogs really count as amphibians…? And honestly, those toads gross me out a bit — and that’s hard for biology to do to me!
According to a recent anonymous poll in Nature magazine. Further commentary at WebMD. Crazy, huh?
