Halloween 06 Photo Gallery

Halloween came early this year, since all the happenin’ (and not so happening) parties wanted to strut their stuff on the weekend… Needless to say, we have some “fun fotos” of our pumpkins, our costumes, and all the crazy costumes at the party we attended. Read on for a captioned selection of the photos.

Teisha the Dragon is shown flashing her claws. Teisha and I worked together to make her mask, and I think it turned out wonderfully.

Andrew the Knight
Andrew the Knight is modelling for a lucrative career in car salesmanship. I… bought this costume. *hides* Still, it looks pretty darn good!

Mike and Li
Mike and Li went as a Turkey, and the farmer about to make a fine turkey dinner. Very cute, and a nice “last minute” costume.

Road and Kill
Road and Kill was one of the most creative costumes we saw at the party.

Speaking of the Party… it was the Chemistry Department Halloween Party, so it was par for the course to see Jello shots in syringes and dry ice bubbling in the cauldrons of jungle juice.

PA280009.JPG
The party organizers really went out of their way to make good decorations, though… very well done (I guess one of the housemates is a professional photographer, and so wanted “good design”. He also blinded everyone at the party over and over with his camera)

PA280116.JPG
Our pumpkins came out beautifully, and we had a lot of fun with a “Pumpkin Carving Party” with Mike and Li… I drank way too much spiced appled cider, though. Guess who made which pumpkin(s)!

PA280118.JPG
Even the Fake Pumpkin that I got at Michael’s came out really well, and now I can, smell and fire hazard-free, keep a Halloween decoration at work next week.

Thanks for checking out the photos– there are many more in the full gallery!

Miss Conduct? It burns with punny goodness!

What are the equations on the back? They’re hard to read.

Yeah, the Dragon mask was kick ass. Teisha did the flames (I told her I didn’t think it would turn out.. how wrong was I!)

Ye of little faith! The flames turned out awesome!

The equations on the back of the sash are the definitions of electrical conductance and thermal conductance (technically, it’s the rate of heat transfer with respect to time and cartesian space, since thermal conductance is just a material constant. But I thought the partial diffy-q was scarier :-P).

There were about 4 people who got it, and only 2 of them thought it was funny :-P

Free Rice

Okay, I’ll admit that it’s entirely possible that I am the last person to learn about this website*, but it’s really addictive.  It’s a game that tests your vocabulary.  Each time you get a word’s meaning correct, 20 grains of rice are donated to the UN World Program.  So, give Free Rice a whirl.  I bet you’ll have fun and you’ll get to help make strides toward ending hunger.

*I heard about it forever ago, I just never actually looked at it.

Security Cam Music Video

This band decided they didn’t have money to make a video, so they set up in public places in view of security cameras, then asked to get the footage from the people.

Pretty cool results, though a little creepy to think how much these cameras are around.

A news story about it is here

Some Frogs and Toads are just weird…

Thanks to one of my favorites blogs, Zooillogix, I recently got to see toads giving live birth from their back and frogs without lungs. I must say, amphibians are weird! But do those frogs really count as amphibians…? And honestly, those toads gross me out a bit — and that’s hard for biology to do to me!
