Just wanted to share that my first first-author paper is now online! In the journal Stem Cells and Development, here’s my paper on “Roles of Integrins in Human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell Growth on Matrigel and Vitronectin.”
Look sharp and feast your grimey eyes (Ayes!) on this here mess o’ pics from the Ojai Pirate Faire 2006. Yes, Andrew wrote that first part and I stole it for the post, as my pirate tongue be not as good as his. But anyway, we went to the Ojai Pirate Faire (link above) last Sunday with a few friends and had a lot of fun! As you can see from the picts (linked above), there were tons of people in garb — it was quite a site — and many entertainers and sellers of unique wares all in pirate, or Renaissance, character. We weren’t sure whether we should go at first or not, as the nationally infamous Day Fire (named so because it started on Labor Day) was about 15 miles east of us around Ojai and still not under control. (Unfortunately, as you can see from that latest article, it’s still rather out of control…) However, the ash didn’t get to us at all, and all we really saw of the fire was a bit of smoke over some hills a ways away. As Andrew said, “never was a better time had by me and me hearties!”

Just read a fascinating (if lengthy) essay on disruptive technology and the future of scientific publishing. Well worth the read!
Just wanted to share Mint.com’s Visual Guide to Deflation, which is quite explanatory.

Okay, I’ll admit that it’s entirely possible that I am the last person to learn about this website*, but it’s really addictive.
It’s a game that tests your vocabulary. Each time you get a word’s meaning correct, 20 grains of rice are donated to the UN World Program. So, give Free Rice a whirl. I bet you’ll have fun and you’ll get to help make strides toward ending hunger.
*I heard about it forever ago, I just never actually looked at it.
