Just wanted to share that my first first-author paper is now online! In the journal Stem Cells and Development, here’s my paper on “Roles of Integrins in Human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell Growth on Matrigel and Vitronectin.”
This lies somewhere between fascinating and creepy– Interactive Map of Registered Sex Offenders. This is made possible by Megan’s Law, which requires state governments to disclose this info. This crosses a border to me, between safety and right to privacy, at least to some degree.
The fact that there are 3 that show up right near my parents house actually makes me feel sorry for these people. While many may remain sick, I’m sure there’s a significant percentage who have truly atoned for what they did and deserve to be able to move on in life. With this kind of tracking technology, will they ever be able to?
Also, how long until Salespeople have wireless laptops with a similar map that shows, say, magazine subscribers… or old folks who might be gullible. Or.. well, anything. Information wants to be free, but sometimes privacy can be a good thing.
I heard a rumor somewhere that sex offenders have a very low chance of ever “getting better”…Has anyone else heard this?

I participated in another Barely literate book review podcast, this time on Nicholson Baker’s “The Fermata”. Give it a listen!
Obama has outlined a strategy for America, in great depth. Read all about Change.gov!
Okay, I’ll admit that it’s entirely possible that I am the last person to learn about this website*, but it’s really addictive.
It’s a game that tests your vocabulary. Each time you get a word’s meaning correct, 20 grains of rice are donated to the UN World Program. So, give Free Rice a whirl. I bet you’ll have fun and you’ll get to help make strides toward ending hunger.
*I heard about it forever ago, I just never actually looked at it.
