So, um, yeah. I'm a little late to be commenting on this, but I feel like planning a wedding is very good excuse. :) Anyway, I met Andrew when you lacked the beard and was, if I recall, one of the most pro-beard people around when he grew it out. It just somehow fits his personality better, in my mind at least. However, I'll love you whether you have extra hair on your face or not. And regardless of your RPBD.

I was thinking about how I've never seen Dick van Dyke with any facial hair, let alone something resembling what we call a "van dyke" so I tried to find the origins of the dead rat's nomenclature looking on Wikipedia and learned a few things -- looking up "beards":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beards I found it's actually called a "van Dyck" after the "17th century English court painter, Anthony van Dyck.":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthony_van_Dyck
However, this term refers to simply a moustache and goatee, not that side facial hair that connects the two (see top picture, right) -- rather a strange misnomer that I've heard many times. There was actually no term listed in the Wikipedia beard entry that properly labels what most people call a "Van dyck" now-a-days... I'm beginning to think this lack of a real naming origin shows that this specific facial hair style is a rather modern fad. Any thoughts?

The Van Dyke is back, and I feel like me again. It's nice to know that it only takes about a week for my hyperactive metabolism to grow it right back onto my face. And my RPD is at 400 books/5 shelves, or 80. That gives a +3 modifer to Freaking the Mundanes. ;-)

Whatever the variation in facial hair, it's reassuring to see the constancy in the "Role-Playing Book Density" (RPBD) on Andrew's bookshelf!! ;-)

Oh alright, I may as well admit that that he's totally attractive in either state... although I still suspect that (at least from my perspective) this has more to do with the RPBD than the beard.

I actually think he looks quite good either way. However, there are two biasing factors I've seen that go against people preferring the "naked" look. First, I believe that people are simply used to Andrew having a beard, causing one prejudice. Secondly, (and this probably applies to people locally much more,) because it's so much faster to hack off the rat than it is to bring it back to life, the shock-value effect again goes against the "naked" look. Just my thoughts... that and (as Anu mentioned) his hair might need to change to go along with the clean-cut look better.

Anyway... you all will probably be relieved to know Andrew's growing it back as we speak :-)

Hi there, Andrew. I think clean-shaven suits you remarkably well, and that the pictures are not commensurable.

Well first off you are smiling WAY more in the picture with the beard, so it's not really a straight across comparison ;). As Meghan said, both looks are good, and in 10 years you are going to like the idea of "shaving" 5 years off ;).

Oh and "Hi!"

Isn't it nice how quickly beards grow back? But honestly, either look is good -- one is just 5 years or so younger than the other. There may come a time when that will strike you as a positive feature!
