Just MP3s, but oh the MP3s– I now have 1900 songs on it, and it’s encouraging me to get whole new styles of music (I want to, for example, buy some more Jazz), because when I hit shuffle and stuff starts randomly coming up, it’s kind of neat to jump around whole styles. Especially since I got a car adaptor– it’s totally different to me having my entire music collection in the car with me.

Actually though, I’m surprised no one has made a radio add-on for the iPod… I looked, but couldn’t find one.

Yes but the PSP also plays games and movies. Multifunction it is. Anyway, does the Ipod just play MP3 or can you get one with a radio feature on it?

I think you’re right, Teisha, in the sense that there is the easy potential for isolation by technology, but I don’t blame the technology for that any more than I blame a knife for being a murder weapon. It’s easy to villianize cell phones, cars, music players as devices of detachment, when the real problem is apathetic people… America seems to have a lot of those lately.

Anyway, just a thought.

I’d be careful of relying on the PSP for music… It only has 32 MB of memory, which you can supplement with a memory stick. A 1 GB memory stick costs about $400. Conversely, a 20 GB iPod costs $300.

*shrugs*

I’d be mighty tempted by the Nintendo DS if I had friends around who would buy it as well– wirelessly networked games on the fly? Nifty!

Damn hard drive crashing and me lossing all my songs.

Anyway on an interesting side note and since I am now in the video game industry. The new PSP (sony hand-held player) is going to be able to play MP3 and movies.

I’m very happy for you, PD

But your post reminded me of something I’ve been thinking about that I can hardly justify as a real tangent, but I’ll try — how do people feel about the increasing sense of detachment in our world? What I mean is, we can all go around now even more in our own little worlds, listening to our own music, and ignoring the larger world around us. What really comes to mind is people in cars — there people can not only listen to their own music, but also create their own enviornments, safe from the elements. Though this has mildly bothered me before, it really came to my attention a week ago around rushhour when I was waiting for a bus, freezing in the snow, watching the cars go by. I feel there’s something wrong with it, but it’s hard to say what, if anything, substantial will result from it…

(Well, PD, it was better than a short jealousy rant at least.)
